Volleyball Earns First Victory Of Young Season With Five Set Non-League Triumph Over Pine Manor

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Charleen Klangos (Lowell, Mass.) notched 14 kills, six digs and five service aces to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 3-2 non-league college volleyball victory over Pine Manor Tuesday evening at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center.

 

After dropping the first set 25-22, the host Buccaneers (1-6) rattled off a pair of 25-19 triumphs before the visiting Gators (2-5) forced the fifth and deciding frame with a 25-19 fourth set win of its own.  Massachusetts Maritime jumped out to a 6-3 advantage in that final set only to see Pine Manor even matters at 11-11, but the hosts scored four of the final five points to earn the victory.

 

Sophomore Jennifer Roy (Attleboro, Mass.) added nine kills, four digs and a pair of service aces for the Buccaneers, who also received 12 digs, seven kills and four set assists from freshman Marie Harrison (Weymouth, Mass.).  Senior Meaghan Brain (Hanson, Mass.) chipped in with five solo blocks and four kills for the winners, who also received 19 set assists and five digs from freshman Michelle Sheehan (Attleboro, Mass.).  Senior Emma Ethier (Norton, Mass.) collected 10 set assists and six digs for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received 11 digs from freshman Christina Ruggeri (Bourne, Mass.).

 

Freshman Kendra Williams (San Diego, Calif.) recorded 12 digs and four service aces in the setback for Pine Manor, which also received nine kills from freshman Keisha Hadorn (Yokosuka, Japan) along with eight digs and five kills from junior Mary Owen (Houston, Tex.).  Junior Ashley Whiteshield (Seward, Ak.) notched 31 set assist, six kills and six digs for the Gators, while freshman Alexa Leon (El Centro, Calif.) added 23 digs and four kills.  Junior Rachael Julien (Brockton, Mass.) posted seven digs and three kills for the visitors, who also received three kills from freshman Viyanni Johnson (Las Vegas, Nev.).

 

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Eastern Nazarene in a non-league outing on Thursday evening at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Pine Manor heads to Dudley, Mass. on Thursday evening for a non-league clash with Nichols that begins at 6:00 p.m.
