Klangos Collects Eight Kills As Volleyball Drops Tri-Match Decision To Westfield State, Pine Manor

WESTFIELD, Mass. --  Senior Carole Duquette (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and freshman Victoria Sutphen (Holden, Mass.) each notched eight kills to lead Westfield State to a 3-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference victory in the opener of a volleyball tri-match played Saturday afternoon at the Woodward Center.  In the nightcap, senior Destiny Mann’s (Orlando, Fla.) 11 kills and 12 digs led Pine Manor to a 3-1 non-league triumph over the Buccaneers.

 

Senior Carolyn Cote (Chelmsford, Mass.) added seven kills in the host Owls’ (10-17, 3-1 MASCAC) 25-11, 25-9, 25-19 opening conference win over the visiting Buccaneers (0-23, 0-5 MASCAC), while freshman Courtney Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) collected 28 set assists for Westfield State.  Junior Charleen Klangos (Lowell, Mass.) registered four kills and six digs in the opening setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received three kills each from senior Meghan Weir (North Andover, Mass.) and sophomore Melissa Harris (Scituate, Mass.), five set assists each from senior Deb Langley (Abington, Mass.) and freshman Becca Mello (Acushnet, Mass.) as well as eight digs from sophomore Stephanie O’Connor (Westwood, Mass.).

 

Sophomore Susan Le (Lowell, Mass.) recorded eight kills in Pine Manor’s (8-15) four set victory in the middle match over the Buccaneers, which came by game scores of 24-26, 25-10, 25-13 and 25-19.  Freshman Ashley Whiteshield (Seward, Ak.) notched 24 set assists and 10 digs for the Gators, which completed a five-match season series sweep with the neutral court triumph.  Klangos paced Massachusetts Maritime with four kills and six digs in the nightcap setback, while Langley and sophomore Meaghan Brain (Hanson, Mass.) each collected three kills for the Buccaneers, who also received 12 digs, eight set assists and two kills from Mello to go with 13 digs from O’Connor.

 

Massachusetts Maritime closes out its 2014 season schedule on Wednesday evening by heading to Salem, Mass. to take on Salem State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference outing that begins at 7:00 p.m., while Westfield State hosts MCLA in a MASCAC match on Wednesday evening at the Woodward Center that also begins at 7:00 p.m.  Pine Manor travels to Hartford, Conn. on Wednesday evening to take on Saint Joseph (Conn.) in a non-league outing beginning at 7:00 p.m.
