WENHAM, Mass. --  Senior Faith Gerdes (Wall Lake, Iowa) notched 10 kills to lead Gordon to a 3-0 opening victory over Massachusetts Maritime and a sweep of a non-league college volleyball tri-match played Saturday afternoon at the Bennett Center.  Castleton posted a 3-1 triumph over the Buccaneers in the middle contest before dropping an identical 3-1 final to the host Fighting Scots in the nightcap.

 

Sophomore Maggie Risma (Hudson, Ohio) added six kills and nine digs in the opening 25-8, 25-9, 25-11 win for Gordon (9-11), which also received six kills from senior Laura Schmidt (Stuart, Fla.) as well as 29 set assists and five service aces from senior Joy Kimmel (Madison, Conn.).  Junior Charleen Klangos (Lowell, Mass.) registered five digs, a kill and a service ace in the opening setback for Massachusetts Maritime (0-18), which also received four digs from sophomore Emma Ethier (Norton, Mass.).

 

Junior Amanda Chambers (Lake George, N.Y.) collected nine kills and 19 digs for Castleton (6-11) in its 25-18, 25-12, 16-25, 25-13 middle match victory, while senior Kaylee Pratt (Hampton, N.Y.) added eight kills.  Freshman Kimberly Jackson (South Windsor, Conn.) chipped in with six kills and 22 digs for the Spartans, who also received 14 set assists, 10 digs and seven service aces from junior Shelby Smyth (Chelmsford, Mass.).

 

Klangos notched six kills and a career-high 16 digs in the second setback for the Buccaneers, who also received eight set assists, six digs and five kills from senior Deb Langley (Abington, Mass.) as well as four kills and 11 digs from senior Meghan Weir (North Andover, Mass.).  Sophomore Melissa Harris (Scituate, Mass.) chipped in with three kills and three digs for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received 25 digs from sophomore Stephanie O’Connor (Westwood, Mass.) as well as three set assists each from Ethier and freshman Becca Mello (Acushnet, Mass.).

 

Massachusetts Maritime hosts MCLA and Becker in a tri-match on Monday morning at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center beginning at 11:00 a.m., while Gordon hosts Suffolk in a non-league outing on Wednesday evening at the Bennett Center that begins at 7:00 p.m.  Castleton hosts SUNY-Cobleskill in a non-league match on Wednesday evening in Castleton, Vt. beginning at 7:00 p.m.
