THROGGS NECK, N.Y. --  The Massachusetts Maritime volleyball team dropped a pair of matches during first round play of the Fifth Annual Maritime Classic on Saturday afternoon at SUNY-Maritime’s Riesenberg Gymnasium, as the Buccaneers fell by a 3-1 final to the host Privateers before dropping a 3-0 decision to Merchant Marine in the nightcap.

 

Junior Charleen Klangos (Lowell, Mass.) registered a career-high eight kills and 12 digs for Massachusetts Maritime (0-9) in the opener against SUNY-Maritime (4-4), as the Buccaneers took the opening set by a 30-28 margin before dropping the next three by scores of 25-21, 25-14 and 25-14.  Junior Emily Calnan (Hingham, Mass.) added five kills and six digs, while sophomore Meaghan Brain (Hanson, Mass.) and freshman Becca Mello (Acushnet, Mass.) each had four kills and combined for eight digs for Massachusetts Maritime.  Senior Deb Langley (Abington, Mass.) added 11 set assists and 19 digs for the Buccaneers, who also received a career-high 24 digs from sophomore Stephanie O’Connor (Westwood, Mass.).  Freshman Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y.) recorded 22 kills in the win for the Privateers, who also received a combined 39 set assists from senior Christine McCormack (Goshen, N.Y.) and sophomore Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y.).

 

Langley notched three kills, three set assists and five digs in Massachusetts Maritime’s 25-10, 25-6, 25-11 setback to Merchant Marine (9-1), while sophomore Melissa Harris (Scituate, Mass.) added a pair of kills for the Buccaneers, who also received four digs from O’Connor.  Senior Cassandra Palmer (Loomis, Calif.) registered 10 kills in the win for the Mariners, who also received 27 set assists from freshman Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.).

 

Massachusetts Maritime will square off with Maine Maritime in second round play of the Fifth Annual Maritime Classic on Sunday afternoon at Riesenberg Gymnasium beginning at Noon.
