Weir, Brain Each Notch Three Kills As Volleyball Falls To Rival Maine Maritime At Maritime Classic

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. --  Sophomore Gillian O’Neal (Burbank, Calif.) notched 12 kills and 10 digs to lead Maine Maritime to a 3-0 victory over Massachusetts Maritime in second round the Fifth Annual Maritime Volleyball Classic played Sunday afternoon at SUNY-Maritime’s Riesenberg Gymnasium.

 

Senior Sydney Robertson (Barnstead, N.H.) added three kills and four digs for the Mariners (3-7) in the triumph, which came by game scores of 25-18, 25-11 and 25-14.  Senior Betsy Trenckmann (La Veta, Colo.) registered 17 set assists for Maine Maritime, which also received five digs from junior Molly Marcotte (Seekonk, Mass.).

 

Senior Meghan Weir (North Andover, Mass.) and sophomore Meaghan Brain (Hanson, Mass.) each collected three kills and combined for five digs in the setback for the Buccaneers (0-10), who also received two kills, three digs and four set assists from senior Deb Langley (Abington, Mass.) as well as a pair of kills from sophomore Melissa Harris (Scituate, Mass.).  Sophomore Stephanie O’Connor (Westwood, Mass.) notched 10 digs for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received six digs from junior Charleen Klangos (Lowell, Mass.).  Brain earned a spot on the Maritime Classic all-tournament team for her efforts on the weekend.

 

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Leicester, Mass. on Tuesday evening to take on Becker in a non-league match that begins at 7:00 p.m., while Maine Maritime hosts Maine-Fort Kent in a non-league outing on Saturday afternoon in Castine, Maine beginning at 4:30 p.m.
