Buccaneers Fall to Vikings in Final Regular Season Game

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Buccaneers celebrated seniors Grace CalvertPaige Albertson, and Sue Bird on Saturday prior to their conference game against Salem State. In the game, the Bucs fell to the Vikings 15-10. With the loss, the Buccaneers have been eliminated from playoff contention.

In The Field

Maritime

  • Cassie Llewellyn led the Bucs with four goals.
  • Lindsy Durgin and Brady Deschamps each scored twice.
  • Allie Dickinson and Paige Albertson each scored once.
  • Dickinson recorded three assists, Llewellyn and Deschamps each had one helper.
  • Deschamps led the Bucs in ground balls with five.
  • Llewellyn picked up seven draw controls to lead the team. 
  • Defensively, Durgin caused three turnovers in the loss.
  • In total, Maritime picked up 24 ground balls, were successful on 15-of-17 clears, won 13 draw controls and took 31 total shots.

Salem

  • Jenna Wells led all players with six goals.
  • Taylor Sujko and Aislinn Bennett scored three times. 
  • Mackenzie Schmink scored twice and Madison White scored once.
  • Sujoko, Schmink, and Laura Young each had two assists. White and Kaia Hollingsworth each had one assist.
  • White led the team in ground balls with four and draw controls with 11. 
  • Defensively, White led the team with two caused turnovers.
  • In total, Salem picked up 18 ground balls, were successful on 15-of-19 clears, won 16 draw controls and took 27 shots.

How It Happened

Salem scored the first and only two goals of the first quarter at 9:00 and 1:21, both from Bennett. Salem led the Bucs 2-0 after one.

In the second, Salem made it 3-0 on Bennet's third goal in a row at 14:35. The Buccaneers didn't roll over as they scored the next four to close out the hald. Albertson scored at 12:10 followed by three in a row from Llewellyn at 9:28, 8:29 and 5:55 to give the Buccaneers a 4-3 lead that they carried into the halftime break.

In the third, Salem came out firing, getting four goals in the first four minutes, two from Sujko and two from Wells, retaking the lead and extending it to three goals, 7-4. Llewllyn scored another at 5:38 to get back within two goals, 7-5. Salem struck back on a White goal at 5:20 to go back up three. Deschamps scored a powerplay goal at 3:25 to make the score 8-6. Schmink scored at 2:37 to give the Vikings a 9-6 lead at the end of the third.

Deschamps opened the scoring in the fourth with the Bucs seventh to bring the score to 9-7. Salem went on to score three straight between 13:41 and 9:31 making it 12-7. Dickinson scored at 8:16 to get back within four, 12-8, with just over eight minutes left. Salem scored three in a row again, two from Wells and one from Sujko to make the score 15-8. In the final 1:41, Durgin scored twice for the Buccaneers to reach double digits and make the score 15-10 which went on to be the final score.
