Bucs Edged out by Mariners in Overtime

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Saturday afternoon, the Bucs hosted Maine Maritime in their home opener. In a close tie between the two squads Maine Maritime came out on top, 10-9, defeating the Bucaneers for the first time ever.

Mass Maritime

  • Allie Dickinson led the Bucs offensively with three goals and two assists.
  • Junior Captain Cassie Llewellyn and Lindsy Durgin each scored two goals and had an assist.
  • Grace Calvert and Sydney McCarthy each scored one goal.
  • Senior Captain Paige Albertson recorded three helpers in the loss.
  • Llewellyn won four draw controls in the game reaching the 100 career draw controls milestone.
  • Brady Deschamps picked up a team-high five ground balls. Caleigh Tompkins and Durgin each picked up four ground balls.
  • The Bucs picked up 30 ground balls, were successful on 19 of 38 clears, won 10 draw controls, and took 19 shots.

Maine Maritime

  • Beth Labbe scored a game-high four goals for Maine.
  • Hael Stoddard netted three goals and recorded an assist.
  • Olivia Harriman scored twice and Lily Cook netted one goal.
  • Kirra Magana tallied three assists.
  • Stoddard and Magana each won seven draw controls to lead all players.
  • Defensively, Stoddard led all players with five caused turnovers.
  • She also picked up a game-high nine ground balls. Labbe and Magana each picked up seven.
  • Maine picked up 53 ground balls, were successful on 20 of 28 clears, won 15 draw controls, and took 35 shots in the game.

How It Happened

The Buccaneers scored first in the Saturday matinee with two goals in the first four minutes and less than forty seconds apart. Dickinson scored both on assists from Llewellyn and Durgin to give the Bucs an early 2-0 lead. Maine cut it to a one-goal deficit two minutes later on a Stoddard free position goal. Llewellyn scored her first at th 9:52 mark to extend the Bucs lead back to two goal, 3-1. On her second free position goal of the game, in a man-up situation, Stoddard made it 3-2 with 25 seconds left in the first.

In the second quarter, each team scored once. At the 8:34 mark, McCarthy scored her first of the season from Paige Albertson to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Bucs. Harriman found the back of the net with 2:03 left in the half and the teams went to the break at 4-3, Buccaneers in front.

In the second half, the Bucs pulled away a bit with goals early from Llewellyn and Durgin. Harriman scored her second from Magana with four minutes left in the quarter. The Bucs, up 6-4, got a third goal in the game from Dickinson with 1:33 left in the third to make it a 7-4 advantage in favor of the Buccaneers. 

In the fourth quarter, the Bucs got in to some card trouble with Llewellyn and Durgin both receiving their second yellow cards, disqualifying them from the game. The Mariners took full advantage, outscoring the Buccaneers 5-2 in the quarter on goals from Cook, Stoddard, and three from Labbe. The Bucs got goals from Durgin and Calvert but needed one more to put the game to rest and the teams went to overtime tied at 9-9.

With no scoring in the first two overtimes, thanks to outstanding play in goal by Bird, The teams went to another overtime period still knotted at 9-9. Then, 22 second in to the next overtime period, Labbe scored her fourth and the deciding goal to give the Mariners their first ever win over the Bucs, 10-9.
