Buccaneers Ground Eagles in Comeback Fashion

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Women's Lacrosse took on Husson University on Taylors Point on Saturday for just the second time in program history. The last time the two teams met in 2012 the Eagles won handily, 17-5. This time, they weren't as fortunate, though the game was close down to the end as the Bucs won in comeback fashion, 13-12.

In The Field

Maritime

  • Cassie Llewellyn led all Bucs with five goals in the win.
  • Allie DickinsonLindsy DurginBrady Deschamps, and Paige Albertson all scored twice.
  • Dickinson recorded a game-high three assists. 
  • Llewellyn and Durgin each had two helpers. Deschamps added one assist.
  • Llewellyn won a game-high 11 draw controls in the win tying her previous career-high from last season.
  • Durgin picked up a team-high six ground balls. 
  • Defensively, Durgin caused a career high and program record tying six turnovers. 
  • Maritime picked up 23 ground balls, were successful on 12-of-18 clear attempts, won 17 draws, and took 35 total shots.

Husson

  • Averi Baker scored a game-high seven goals. Five other players recorded a score for the Eagles.
  • Laela Martinez recorded three assists and Emma Doiron had two. Three other players had one apiece.
  • Baker won four draw controls to lead her team.
  • Martinez picked up a game-high seven ground balls. 
  • Defensively, Devyn Veits caused two turnovers.
  • Husson picked up 33 ground balls, were successful on 15-of-22 clears, won 12 draw controls, and took a total of 21 shots in the loss.

 

How It Happened

Directly off the opening draw won by Deschamps, she stormed down the field and scored 12 seconds in to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead. Maritime went on to score two more unanswered from Llewellyn and Dickinson to take a 3-0 lead halfway through the first. Husson got one back at 4:32 from Veits and the Bucs led 3-1 after one quarter of play.

In the second, Husson scored the first two as Baker and Sophia Gomez netted scores to tie the game at 3-3. Maritime went on a three-goal run again from 11:33 to 8:57 with goals from Durgin, Llewellyn, and Albertson to retake a three-goal, 6-3, advantage. In the final two minute of the half, the Eagles scored with 1:23 from the stick of Baker to pull Husson within two. Llewellyn got a free position shot with eight seconds remaining and buried it to give her team a 7-4 lead at the half.

In the third quarter, Husson came out of the locker room firing as they outscored the Buccaneers 6-1 in the 15-minute period. They scored the first four in nine minute including on a power play, to tie the game and take an 8-7 lead. Maritime tied it up at 8-8 on Deschamps second of the day at 4:11. The Eagles scored twice more in the final three minutes to take their second lead of the quarter and we went to the fourth with Husson leading 10-8.

In the fourth, Maritime came back to life, scoring the first two goals of the quarter from Albertson and Dickinson at 14:04 and 12 seconds later at 13:52 to tie the game at 10-10. Baker scored again for Husson at 9:50 to retake the lead for the Eagles. Maritime didn't go away though as Llewellyn scored two more times, back-to-back at 7:57 and 5:50 to put the Bucs up 12-11. Durgin added another at 4:43 to make it a two-goal, 13-11, lead. With 1:13 left, Baker scored her seventh to get the Eagles within one. Maritime ran out the clock after the draw and walked off the field with a 13-12 victory to move to 2-2 on the season.

 

What's Next

The Buccaneers are off until next Sunday when they travel to New Hampshire to take on Keene State at 3pm.
