Buccaneers Women's Lacrosse: 2023 Preview

The Bucs women's lacrosse team, sixth place finishers in the MASCAC in 2022, are getting set to take the field in 2023 with nine returning players and a handful of young Bucs. 

In 2022, the Buccaneers posted a 9-8 regular season record and were 2-5 in conference play. Notable wins for the Bucs came against Clark, Nichols in overtime, UMass Dartmouth and conference wins over a much improved Fitchburg team and MCLA. The team went on to face Worcester in the MASCAC playoffs for the second season since 2019 and fell to the Lancers by a score of 15-5. 

Of the returning players for this season, Cassie Llewellyn scored 29 goals with 15 assists for 44 points in 2022 while now sophomores Lindsy Durgin and Allie Dickinson combined for 45 goals and 17 assists in their freshman campaigns. Now seniors Paige Albertson and Grace Calvert combined for 17 goals and 10 assists. 

Seventh-year head coach Marc Palombo and his staff will have a new look team at a number of positions in 2023. With only three seniors on the squad, including captains Paige Albertson and Grace Calvert the youth on the Bucs will be poised to shine on the field this year. 

In the attack, with the graduation of Alyssa DiScipio and Nora McLaughlin the team will look to junior captain Cassie Llewellyn and the seniors for offensive production.

Maritime will play a 16-game schedule in 2023 that begins at Clark University in Worcester on March 1st. The team will take on Maine Maritime in their annual matchup on March 4th in Buzzards Bay. The Bucs have added some new teams to the schedule with the like of Husson, Keene State, and Hartford in the mix and they will see some familiar faces like Rhode Island College, Nichols, and UMass Dartmouth. 

The team's conference slate begins on April Fool's Day with a trip to Westfield State. Their home conference opener is against Fitchburg State on April 7th. The Bucs will close out their regular season with a home matchup against Salem State on April 29th.

"We are a young team and will definitely be mixing things up this year to get wins," said head coach Marc Palombo. "We have been on an upward trajectory for a number of years now and we don't intend to change that trend any time soon."
