Buccaneers Lose to Falcons in Conference at Home

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Buccaneers hosted the Fitchburg Falcons on Friday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium in the second conference game of the season for both teams. The Bucs took an early lead over the Falcons and couldn't hang on losing to Fitchburg 15-10.

Maritime

  • Cassie Llewellyn led all scorers with six goals.
  • Allie Dickinson added two scores and Grace Calvert and Lindsy Durgin each scored once to round out the scoring.
  • Llewellyn and Durgin each recorded two assists in the game.
  • Llewellyn led all players with seven ground balls, Durgin picked up five.
  • Llewellyn led the Bucs in draw controls with three in the game. Calvert and Brady Deschamps each won two.
  • Defensively, Llewellyn and Emma Dintino each caused four turnovers and Calvert caused three.
  • In total, the Bucs picked up 26 ground balls, were successful on 22-of-29 clears, won eight draw controls and took a total of 31 shots.

Fitchburg

  • Eva Kozikowski tied for the scoring lead in the win with six goals. 
  • Cali Laasko scored four times for the Falcons with Jessica St. George added three scores and Abaigeal Gilman and Nicole Orlowski each scoring once.
  • Kozikowski recorded five assists in the game for Fitchburg. Laasko had three helpers and St. George and Orlowski had one each.
  • St. George led the Falcons in ground balls with four and won the most draw controls with seven.
  • Grace Wetherbee caused a team-high three turnovers on the defensive end.
  • In total, the Falcons picked up 21 ground balls, were successful on 15-of-23 clears, won 21 draw controls, and took a total of 30 shots.

How It Happened

Fitchburg opened the scoring with a goal 29 seconds in from Kozikowski. They scored again to make it 2-0 at the 11:06 mark on Kozikowski's second. The Bucs then scored two of their own, both from Llewellyn on power plays at 9:54 and then late in the quarter at 53 second to tie the game at 2-2 going to the second.

The Bucs continued their scoring in the second scoring the first two goals of the quarter from Llewellyn at 10:44 and Durgin at 8:46 to take a 4-2 lead. Fitchburg went on to score four unanswered in just under three minutes from 7:57 to 5:04 to retake the lead, 6-4. In the final three minutes of the half each team scored with Maritime finding the back of the net at 2:33 on Llewellyn's fourth and the Falcons scored with 26 seconds left to keep a two-goal lead, 7-5, headed to the break.

To begin the third, the Falcons scored at 13:29 and again at 12:39 to make it 9-5. The Falcons added another at 8:24 to double up the Bucs 10-5. Maritime scored the final two goals of the quarter at 5:40 and 3:48 from Dickinson and Llewellyn and trailed 10-7 headed to the fourth.

Llwellyn scored her sixth to open the fourth quarter of play at 11:56 to pull the Bucs within two. Fitchburg extended the lead back to three at 10:18. Calvert scored at 9:51 to make the score 11-9 with just under 10 minutes to play. Fitchburg then went on a three-goal run scoring at 8:45, 4:50, and 4:32 to go up 14-9. The Bucs got to double digits on Dickinson's second of the game at 3:58. With one second left in the game, the Falcons scored their 15th goal of the game and the clock expired giving them the 15-10 conference win over the Buccaneers.
