Women's Lax Loses Conference Opener to Owls on the Road

WESTFIELD, Mass -- The Buccaneers opened their conference schedule on Saturday on the road against Westfield State and came home empty handed losing to the Owls 17-5.

In the Field

Maritime

  • Cassie Llewellyn led the Bucs offensively with two goals and an assist.
  • Allie Dickinson scored once and added a helper. 
  • Lindsy Durgin and Brady Deschamps each scored a goal in the loss.
  • Sue Bird and Llewellyn each picked up three ground balls to lead the Bucs.
  • Llewellyn led the team in draw controls with six, Deschamps won five draws.
  • Defensively, Caleigh Tompkins led the team with two caused turnovers.
  • In total, Maritime picked up 10 ground balls, were successful on 11-of-20 clears, won 11 draw controls, and took 17 shots in the game.

Westfield

  • Cassidy Connolly and Natalie DeMaio each scored six goals. 
  • Arianna Andreson scored three times and Emma Prattson scored twice.
  • Prattson had six assists to her name in the win. Kiely Hafensteiner and Emma Cretella each had three assists.
  • Andreson led the Owls with three ground balls.
  • Defensively, Lindsey Bohenki had two caused turnovers.
  • In total, the Owls picked up 15 ground balls, were successful on 14-of-16 clears, won 14 draw controls, and took a total of 35 shots.

How It Happened

Westfield opened the first quarter with two goals in the first minute of the game. They went on to score five unanswered in the first 11 minutes of the game and led 5-0 with four minutes left in the first. Llewellyn scored for the Bucs with 35 second left in the quarter to make it 5-1 after one.

In the second, Llewellyn opened the period with her second goal of the game 40 seconds in. Westfield answered quickly, less than a minute later to go up 6-2. The Owls scored three more in the quarter, unanswered, and led the Bucs 9-2 at the half.

DeMaio scored the first two goals of the second half to put her team up 11-2 with 7:37 left in the third. Dechamps and Durgin scored back-to-back goals for the Bucs at 5:36 and 4:11 of the third to make it 11-4. Andreson scored twice in the final 1:01 of the third quarter, including a goal as time expired. The Owls led 13-4 after three quarters of play.

In the fourth, Westfield continued to add on the goals with four unanswered between 11:46 and 2:32, taking a 17-4 lead. With 1:22 left in the game, Dicinson scored, unassisted, to make the score 17-5, the eventual final score of the game.

The Bucs are back on the road on Tuesday, April 4th against Emerson in Boston at 6pm.
