Women's Lax Scores 16 in First Win

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Women's Lacrosse took on Rhode Island College on Tuesday evening at home. The Bucs earned their first win of the season over the Anchorwomen by a final of 16-2.

In the Field

Maritime

  • Junior captain Cassie Llewellyn led all players with seven goals. 
  • Senior captain Paige Albertson and Lindsy Durgin each scored three times.
  • Allie Dickinson scored twice and Brady Deschamps rounded out the scoring with one goal.
  • Llewellyn, and Dickinson each recorded two assists. 
  • Durgin, Albertson, and Sydney McCarthy each added one helper.
  • Llewellyn won a game-high seven draw controls.
  • Llewellyn and Dickinson each picked up seven ground balls. 
  • Defensively, Kylie MaherPricilla Murray, and McCarthy each caused two turnovers. 
  • Maritime picked up 38 ground balls, were successful on 14-of-18 clears, won 15 draw controls, and took 33 total shots in the win.

Rhode Island College

  • Amara Gibau and Sydnee Pires each scored a goal.
  • Gibau won five draw controls to lead her team.
  • Ashley Rewers and Hannah Marley picked up a team-high four ground balls.
  • Defensively, Gibau caused four turnovers and Rewers caused three.
  • RIC picked up 17 ground balls, were successful on 10-of27 clears, won eight draw controls, and took a total of eight shots.

How It Happened

Maritime scored right off the draw with Llewellyn winning it and finding Albertson for a goal at the 14:33 mark. A minute later, Llewellyn scored her first, followed by her second at 9:27. Deschamps scored from McCarthy at 7:46 to give the Bucs a 4-0 lead. Durgin scored the final goal of the quarter at 6:08 and the Bucs led 5-0 after one quarter of play.

In the second, it was all Maritime again as they scored thrice with goals from Alberton at 11:48, Llewellyn with her third at 6:03, and Dickinson with her first at 2:07. The Buccaneers led 8-0 at the halftime break.

In the third, the Bucs scored first at 13:48 on Llewellyns, fourth. RIC erased the shutout 28 seconds later when Pires scored to make it 9-1. Maritime would score four more in the quarter, two from Llewellyn, one from Dickinson, and one from Albertson to bump their lead to 13-1 after three quarters.

In the fourth, the Anchorwomen opened the scoring 19 seconds in on Gibau's goal. That would be all for RIC with Maritime scoring three more, two from Durgin at 12:08 and 2:23, and one from Llewellyn, her seventh, at 5:22. The Bucs went on to win comfortably 16-2 to earn their first win of the season.
