Bucs Lose to Cougars in Season Opener

WORCESTER, Mass -- The Bucs women's lacrosse team opened their season on Wednesday evening in Worcester against Clark University. With two games already under their bet, the Cougars bested the Bucs by a final of 9-5.

Maritime

  • Junior captain Cassie Llewellyscored two goals and added an assist.
  • Freshman Brady Deschamps scored twice and had an assist in the game.
  • Lindsy Durgin scored a goal and tallied an assist.
  • Grace Calvert scored one goal in the loss.
  • Llewellyn picked up seven ground balls in the game. Durgin added five ground balls while Deschamps and Allie Dickinson each picked up four.
  • Llewellyn had a game-high seven draw controls.

Clark

  • Kiley Simmons led all scorers in the game with four goals. 
  • Greer McCarty and Aubrey Conners each had two goals. 
  • Sophie Didier added one goal in the win.
  • Simmons contributed three assists with Elizabeth Liakos and Conners each tallying one.
  • Mary Greene led the team in ground balls with seven. Jill Cass picked up five of her own. Three players recorded four ground balls.
  • Meghan Fogarty had four draw controls to lead the Cougars while McCarty added three of her own. 

How It Happened

Clark took a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game on a Conners goal at 11:23 and a McCarty goal at 8:49. The Bucs scored their first on a Durgin goal from a Free Position at the eight-minute mark. Clark opened the lead back to two goals with 5:49 left in the quarter on Simmons' first goal from Conner. Down 3-1, Llewellyn scored her first with 3:10 left in the quarter. Simmons went on to score her second goal, unassisted, with @:47 remaining to make it 4-2. Maritime close out the first quarter, the highest scoring of the game, with a Calvert goal, from Durgin, with 1:15 left on the clock. The Cougars led 4-3 after one.

In the second quarter there were only two goals scored, both by Clark. The first came at 13:15 remaining in the half on McCarty's second goal. Simmons netted her third with 3:37 left before the break to give the Cougars a 6-3 advantage going in to the half.

The third quarter saw as much scoring as the second with each team scoring once. Llewellyn opened the half wit ha goal at the 12:30 mark of the third to make it a two-goal, 6-4, Clark lead. Simmons scored her fourth with 7:26 left in the quarter to open the lead back to three goals, 7-4, heading to the fourth.

In the fourth, Deschamps opened the scoring less than 30 seconds in to make it 7-5. Clark went on to score tow unanswered at 13:31 and 7:33 to go up 9-5. Though they couldn't erase the deficit, the Bucs scored one more time on Deschamps second with 10 seconds left in the game.

The Bucs went on to lose the game by a final of 9-6.

The Buccaneers will host Maine Maritime on Saturday at 12pm in the team's home opener at Clean Harbors Stadium.
