Buccaneers Bite Bigger than Lions Roar in Comeback Win

BOSTON, MA -- The Buccaneer and Lions met in Boston on Tuesday evening in a non-conference game for the two squads. The Lions jumped out to a commanding 5-1 lead at the end of the first and the resilient Bucs erased the deficit and went on to win 13-12.

Maritime

  • Cassie Llewellyn led the Bucs with four scores.
  • Lindsy Durgin recorded three goals in the win.
  • Grace CalvertAllie Dickinson, and Paige Albertson each scored twice.
  • Brady Deschamps recorded the only two assists of the game for Maritime in the victory.
  • Llewellyn led the game in ground balls with six.
  • Calvert won a team-high five draw controls.

Emerson

  • Lauren Longstreet led all players with six goals.
  • Hannah Beck scored three times.
  • Grace Danehy scored twice and Ava Selby rounded out the scoring with one goal.
  • Longstreet, Beck, and Selby all had two assists in the game. Callie Krosin recorded one helper.
  • Suha Cho led the Lions in ground balls with four in the loss.
  • Selby won a game-high six draw controls.
  • Defensively, Jules Rein led all players with three caused turnovers.
  • In total, Emerson picked up 11 ground balls, were successful on 14-of-18 clears, won 15 draw controls, and took 28 shots in the loss.

How It Happened

Less than two minutes into the first the Buccaneers scored on Llewellyn's first of the night to make it 1-0 Maritime. Emerson proceeded to score five unanswered between 11:55 and 3:09 of the quarter to take a 5-1 lead that they took into the second. 

The Lions extended their rally to seven straight goals with scores from Beck and Selby at 14:09 and 12:39 of the second quarter. Down 7-1, the Buccaneers went on a run of their own, scoring three unanswered starting with Llewellyn's second at 10:38, followed by Albertson's first at 5:07 and Llewellyn's third with 14 second remaining in the half. At the break, the Lions led the Bucs 7-4.

The third quarter was a score fest with nine total goals. Emerson started it off with two from Longstreet and Beck. The Bucs followed that with two of their own from Durgin and Albertson to make it 9-6 halfway through the third. Emerson sprinkled in a goal from Danehy and then the Bucs scored three more in a row from Dickingson, Durgin and Llewellyn. Emerson added one more with 1:47 left in the third and though the Buccaneers were inching closer, the Lions led after three quarters of play, 11-9.

In the fourth, Maritime turned on the jets with four in a row finding the back of the net. Calvert scored two in a row at 10:42 and 8:49 to tie the game at 11-11. Durgin scored at 4:02 and Dickinson netted another at 3:07 to put Maritime up two, 13-11, with just over three minutes to play. Emerson scored one more at 1:28 but it wouldn't be enough to get back into it as the Buccaneers rode out the rest of the game and completed the comeback winning 13-12 over the Lions.

The Bucs are back home on Friday night to take on Fitchburg State in MASCAC play at 7pm.
