Bucs Lose to Corsairs at Home

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Friday evening, the Buccaneers women's lacrosse team hosted UMass Dartmouth in a non-conference matchup at Clean Harbors Stadium. The Bucs put up a fight though they ended up losing 12-8

Maritime

  • Cassie Llewellyn led the bucs offensively with five goals.
  • Grace Calvert had two goals of her own and Paige Albertson rounded out the scoring with one goal.
  • Allie Dickinson had two assists and Llewellyn had one.
  • Llewellyn led all players with six ground balls.
  • Calvert led the team in draw controls with three.
  • Defensively, Llewellyn led all players with five caused turnovers.
  • In total, Maritime picked up 23 ground balls, were successful on 14-of-29 clears, won nine draw controls, and took 25 shots.

UMass Dartmouth

  • Melanny Sanchez Alvarez led all players with six goals.
  • Widline Thomas and Maddie Wright each had two goals.
  • Alannah Paiva and Hannah Mitus each added a goal.
  • Thomas had three assists in the win. Four other players had one assist.
  • Sanchez Alvarez and Claire Peterson led the Corsairs with four ground balls. 
  • Wright had a game-high eight draw controls.
  • Defensively, Sanchez Alvarez and Thomas led the team in caused turnovers with three each.
  • In total, Dartmouth had 19 ground balls, were successful on 18-of-23 clears, won 15 draw controls, and took 32 shots.

How It Happened

The first quarter was the highest scoring in the game with a total of nine scores. The Corsairs scored the first two with the first goal coming off the draw 13 seconds in. The second goal came at the 12:52 mark on a powerplay to make it 2-0. Maritime scored the next two, both from Llewellyn, at 12:09 and 11:28 to tie the game at 2-2. Dartmouth scored the next two at 11:17 and 8:31 to pull back ahead by two goals, 4-2. Grace Calvert pulled the Bucs back within one goal at the 6:19 mark to make it 4-3. The Corsairs scored at 3:33 to go ahead 5-4 and then again at 1:49 to go ahead by three goals, 6-3, at the end of the first.

The Buccaneers scored the first goal of the second quarter with 10:08 left. UMD scored the last three goals of the half with Sanchez Alvarez scoring two and Mitus scoring one a player down due to penalty at 6:06. The Corsairs led the Buccaneers at the break, 9-4.

In the third quarter, Dartmouth scored the first goal of the period from Thomas at the 12:10 mark reaching double digits, going up 10-4. Maritime scored the next two goals from Albertson and Llewellyn to pull within four goals. The Corsairs closed out the quarter with a Paiva goal to make it 11-6 UMD.

Maritime outscored the Corsairs in the fourth quarter two to one with goals at 11:16 and 2:38. The Corsairs scored a goal in the middle of the two Maritime goals from Thomas. At the end of the fourth, the Bucs comeback fell short and the Corsairs won 12-8.
