BOSTON, Mass. -- Sophomore Hillary Doucette (Manchester, Mass.) scored a career-high and program-best eight goals and added an assist for nine points as Massachusetts Maritime claimed its first victory as a varsity intercollegiate program by erasing a three-goal halftime deficit to notch an 18-16 non-league college women’s lacrosse triumph over Wheelock Thursday evening at Winsor Field.
The visiting Buccaneers (1-5) trailed 13-10 at the break, and after the host Wildcats (0-6) extended that margin to 14-10 on freshman Valerie Ferrante’s (Milford, Mass.) marker just 30 seconds after intermission, Massachusetts Maritime rattled off seven unanswered tallies, including a hat trick off the stick of senior Shauna Callinan (West Falmouth, Mass.), to take a 17-14 advantage with just over eight minutes remaining in the contest. Wheelock closed back to within a pair on Ferrante’s fifth goal of the night with 7:20 to play, and the two teams traded markers over the final 2:41 of action to account for the final score, as Doucette capped her night with the final Buccaneer tally that presented Head Coach Julie Rigo with her first collegiate victory.
Junior Kim Courcy (Warwick, R.I.) added four goals and an assist to finish with five points in the triumph for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a pair of goals off the stick of junior Sarah Derrane (Utica, N.Y.). Senior Kerri Conway (West Springfield, Mass.) added a marker and helper for the Buccaneers, who also received an assist from senior Julie Shebroe (Little Falls, N.J.). Ferrante added two assists to her five goals to finish with seven points in the setback for Wheelock, which also received four tallies from sophomore Katie Gavin (Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass.) and a pair of markers each from senior Kylie Hefford (Exeter, N.H.) and sophomore Christina Cubera (Baltimore, Md.). Senior Karyle Kennedy (Byfield, Mass.) added a goal and an assist for the Wildcats, who also received tallies from sophomore Jenna Ghoman (Danvers, Mass.) and freshman Jessica Hersom (Sanford, Maine) as well as an assist off the stick of junior Taylor Rogers (Essex, Mass.).
Freshman Tenley Gillett (Manchester, N.H.) picked up her first collegiate victory with a career-high 17 saves in goal for Massachusetts Maritime, while sophomore Monica Bettle (Pembroke, Mass.) made seven stops in net for Wheelock as the Wildcats outshot the Buccaneers by a 43-30 margin for the contest, but the visitors held a 20-16 advantage in draw controls on the evening.
Massachusetts Maritime heads to Chicopee, Mass. on Saturday afternoon for its New England Women’s Lacrosse Alliance opener with Elms that begins at 2:00 p.m., while Wheelock hosts Curry in a non-league outing on Saturday afternoon at Winsor Field beginning at 1:00 p.m.
