CHICOPEE, Mass. --  Sophomore Hillary Doucette (Manchester, Mass.) netted a hat trick to back a 16-save effort in goal from freshman Tenley Gillett (Manchester, N.H.) as Massachusetts Maritime notched a 9-6 victory over Elms in its inaugural New England Women’s Lacrosse Alliance match played Saturday afternoon at Leary Field.

The visiting Buccaneers (2-5, 1-0 NEWLA) jumped out to a 4-0 cushion just 5:23 into the contest, as markers off the sticks of Doucette, senior Shauna Callinan (West Falmouth, Mass.) and juniors Sarah Derrane (Utica, N.Y.) and Kim Courcy (Warwick, R.I.) staked Massachusetts Maritime to that advantage.  After senior Emily Walsh (Hadley, Mass.) sliced the host Blazers’ (0-7, 0-2 NEWLA) deficit to three, a pair of tallies by senior Julie Shebroe (Little Falls, N.J.) in a 25 second span (the latter coming with 9:19 remaining in the opening half) gave the Buccaneers a 6-1 edge en route to a 7-3 lead at the break.  Elms closed back to within three once again on junior Kaitlyn Harrington’s (East Longmeadow, Mass.) goal with just under 16 minutes to play in the contest, but Doucette’s free position conversion, coupled with a man-up marker by Courcy with 10:35 remaining, enabled the visitors to claim their second five-goal advantage of the day, as a pair of Harrington goals in the final 2:31 of action accounted for the final score.

Sophomore Kayla Narey (South Hadley, Mass.) added a pair of goals in the setback for Elms, which also received an assist from Harrington to complete a four-point performance as well as a helper off the stick of junior Cathy Duquette (Naples, Maine).  Gillett made 10 first half stops in collecting her second straight victory in the Massachusetts Maritime cage, while senior Rachel Schrutt (Chicopee, Mass.) made 14 saves on the day for the Blazers as the Buccaneers outshot Elms by a slim 31-30 margin while holding an 11-6 edge in draw controls for the match.

Massachusetts Maritime seeks its third straight victory in its inaugural varsity campaign on Thursday evening when the Buccaneers host Becker in a New England Women’s Lacrosse Alliance match at Clean Harbors Stadium that begins at 7:00 p.m., while Elms entertains Salem State in a NEWLA outing on Tuesday evening at Leary Field that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
