BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Eveline Lopes (Dorchester, Mass.) scored six goals to lead Daniel Webster to a 10-7 non-league college women’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Monday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

The visiting Eagles (1-0) erased an early one-goal deficit by netting three unanswered tallies in just over three minutes off the sticks of Lopes, senior Samantha Blais (Windsor Locks, Conn.) and junior Samantha Cotoni (Groton, Mass.) to take a 3-1 lead with just under 17 minutes to play in the half, and after junior Kim Courcy’s (Warwick, R.I.) second goal of the night enabled the host Buccaneers (0-3) to slice their deficit back to one, tallies by Lopes and sophomore Brandi Ritz (Burlington, N.J.) gave Daniel Webster a three-goal edge en route to a 5-3 lead at the break.

Courcy once again sliced Massachusetts Maritime’s deficit to one with the first marker after intermission, but a pair of Lopes goals coupled with Ritz’s second of the night staked the Eagles to an 8-5 lead with 8:18 remaining in the contest.  The Buccaneers struck for two tallies in a 13 second span off the sticks of Courcy and junior Sarah Derrane (Utica, N.Y.) to trail once again by one ay 8-7 with 6:04 to play, but Lopes sealed Daniel Webster’s season opening triumph with a pair of goals in a 17-second span, the latter coming with 2:26 remaining, as the Eagles presented Head Coach Karen Atkinson with a victory in her collegiate debut.

Courcy finished with a career-high five goals in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a marker off the stick of junior Briana Bergstrom (Quincy, Mass.).  Freshman Deb Langley (Abington, Mass.) added a pair of assists for the Buccaneers, who also received a helper from sophomore Lisa Burke (Hanson, Mass.).

Sophomore Theresa Moscati (Buffalo, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal for Daniel Webster with a four-save effort, while junior Shelagh Hogan (North Andover, Mass.) suffered the setback with one stop in the first 23-plus minutes of play for Massachusetts Maritime.  Freshmen Tenley Gillett (Manchester, N.H.) recorded seven saves over the final 36-plus minutes of action for the Buccaneers, who held a 12-7 edge in draw controls but were outshot by the Eagles by a 20-13 margin for the match.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Dudley, Mass. on Wednesday evening to take on Nichols in a non-league outing that begins at 7:00 p.m., while Daniel Webster hosts Wheelock in a non-league match on Wednesday afternoon in Nashua, N.H. beginning at 4:00 p.m.
