BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Junior Jessica Bartlett (Marlboro, Mass.) netted six goals and an assist for seven points to lead Fitchburg State to a 19-5 New England Women’s Lacrosse Alliance victory over Massachusetts Maritime Friday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

The visiting Falcons (7-9, 5-3 NEWLA) jumped out to a 2-0 advantage on goals by senior Kelly Finamore (Weymouth, Mass.) and freshman Lindsay White (Hanover, Mass.) with just over seven minutes played in the match, and after sophomore Hillary Doucette (Manchester, Mass.) sliced the host Buccaneers’ (2-13, 1-7 NEWLA) deficit in half just 2:18 later, Bartlett scored three unanswered markers as part of a four-goal run that lifted Fitchburg State to a 7-2 edge at the break.  White tallied twice in the first 1:47 after intermission to extend the Falcons’ lead to 9-2, and after junior Kim Courcy (Warwick, R.I.) enabled Massachusetts Maritime to creep back to within six with a marker, the visitors netted five unanswered goals, including four off the stick of junior Cassandra Benoit (North Dartmouth, Mass.) in a 1:33 span, to take a 14-3 advantage with 18:40 remaining en route to the triumph.

Benoit finished with five goals in the victory for Fitchburg State, which received four tallies from White to go with a pair of markers and five assists off Finamore’s stick.  Sophomore Chelsea Roberts (Newburyport, Mass.) chipped in with a goal and an assist in the win for the Falcons, who also received a tally from sophomore Markie Apple (Pittsfield, Mass.) as well as a helper from freshman Megan Peavey (Foxboro, Mass.).

Courcy and Doucette each collected two goals in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a marker from senior Shauna Callinan (West Falmouth, Mass.) and an assist from senior Kerri Conway (West Springfield, Mass.).  Sophomore Dylana Drolette (Burlington, Vt.) picked up the win in goal for Fitchburg State with a 15-save effort, while freshman Tenley Gillett (Manchester, N.H.) made 14 stops in net for the Buccaneers as the Falcons outshot Massachusetts Maritime by a 40-28 margin for the contest.

Massachusetts Maritime completed its inaugural varsity campaign under the guidance of first year Head Coach Julie Rigo with tonight’s match, while Fitchburg State is seeded fourth in the upcoming New England Women’s Lacrosse Alliance Championships and will travel to Bridgewater, Mass. on Wednesday evening to take on top-seeded Bridgewater State in semi-final round play beginning at 6:00 p.m.
