Storm Trysail Regatta

Larchmont, N.Y.

LARCHMONT, N.Y. --  The Massachusetts Maritime offshore sailing team recorded a first and third place finish in competition over the weekend at the Storm Trysail Regatta off Long Island Sound, as the prestigious event brought together 500 sailors from 49 schools across the country and from Canada.

The Buccaneers took top honors in the 16-boat J-109 fleet with two wins on Saturday, as Sunday’s competition was cancelled due to high wind advisories.  Sailing on Storm, which is owned by Academy alumnus Rick Lyall ’79, Massachusetts Maritime’s crew consisted of senior Andrew Gregoire (Charlotte, N.C.), juniors Sean McLaughlin (Fairhaven, Mass.), Priscilla Stoll (Pocasset, Mass.) and Matthew Ferlotti (Fairfax, Va.), sophomore Francis Dougherty (Cataumet, Mass.) and freshmen Kyle Brego (St. John, Virgin Islands) and Emily Cassella (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.).

Seniors Travis Thonus (East Dennis, Mass.), Matthew Butler (Guilford, Conn.), Kaitlyn Nanartowich (Newport, R.I.) and Mark Mejicano-Gormley (Orland Park, Ill.), along with junior Andrew Morgan (Jupiter, Fla.), sophomore Rob Queisser (Carmel, Ind.) and freshmen Ryan Novak-Smith (Johnston, R.I.) and Joseph Dragon (Glen Arm, Md.), posted a third place finish in the J-44 class for the Buccaneers, who topped Maine Maritime, Coast Guard and the United States Military Academy while placing behind only SUNY-Maritime and the United States Naval Academy in the competition.

Massachusetts Maritime also posted a pair of wins in the Swedish Match 40’s class, as seniors Timothy Dexter (Manchester, Vt.) and Kyle Mahaffey (Southbury, Conn.), along with junior Charles Cahill (Duxbury, Mass.), sophomore Tor Johannessen (Amesbury, Mass.) and freshman David Rodriguez (Wellfleet, Mass.), comprised the crew.
