Offshore Sailing Records Fourth Place Tie In Final Standings At Navy Kennedy Cup Regatta

ANNAPOLIS, Md. --  The Massachusetts Maritime offshore sailing team closed out its fall season by posting a tie for fourth place in the final team standings at the prestigious John F. Kennedy Cup Regatta hosted by the United States Naval Academy over the weekend, as the event is considered the national championship for offshore sailing.

 

Led by junior skipper Sean McLaughlin (Fairhaven, Mass.), the Buccaneers finished the regatta in a tie with SUNY-Maritime, but the Privateers claimed the tie-breaker with one more win on the weekend.  Massachusetts Maritime posted a team score of 35 points in the competition, which was won by Cal Maritime with a score of 26 points.  Navy’s Midshipmen posted the runner-up team finish, while the University of Michigan came in third.

 

McLaughlin was joined in the competition by senior Timothy Dexter (Manchester, Vt.), juniors Charles Cahill (Duxbury, Mass.), Matthew Ferlotti (Fairfax, Va.) and Andrew Morgan (Jupiter, Fla.), sophomores Francis Dougherty (Cataumet, Mass.) and Rob Queisser (Carmel, Ind.) and freshmen Ryan Novak-Smith (Johnston, R.I.), Kyle Brego (St. John, Virgin Islands) and Joshua Dragon (Glen Arm, Md.).

 

The Buccaneers bested Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, Michigan State, Maine Maritime and the College of Charleston in the overall competition.
