Offshore Sailing Begins Spring Slate With Sixth Place Finish At Cal Maritime Harbor Cup

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --  The Massachusetts Maritime offshore sailing team began its spring schedule over the weekend with a sixth place finish among 10 teams competing at the Cal Maritime Harbor Cup on Los Angeles Harbor.

 

Seniors Timothy Dexter (Manchester, Vt.) and Travis Thonus (East Dennis, Mass.), juniors Sean McLaughlin (Fairhaven, Mass.), Matthew Ferlotti (Fairfax, Va.) and Andrew Morgan (Jupiter, Fla.) as well as freshmen Ryan Novak-Smith (Johnston, R.I.), Emily Casella (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) and Kyle Brego (St. John, Virgin Islands) represented the Buccaneers in competition on the Pacific Ocean, as the group sailed on Catalina 37 boats throughout the weekend.

 

Host Cal Maritime captured the top team spot in the event for the fourth straight year, while Southern California, the United States Naval Academy, Hawai’i and the College of Charleston followed.  Massachusetts Maritime finished ahead of SUNY-Maritime, Maine Maritime, Long Beach State and Cal-Irvine in the final standings.

 

Additionally, the Buccaneer dinghy sailing team opened its spring schedule with a 14th place finish at the Connecticut College Ice Breaker Regatta in New London, Conn.  Senior Kaitlyn Nanartowich (Newport, R.I.) and sophomore Rob Queisser (Carmel, Ind.) sailed in the "A" division for Massachusetts Maritime, while freshmen George Luber (North Reddington Beach, Fla.) and Natalie Lu (Oak Hill, Va.) competed in the "B" division.

 

The Buccaneers are scheduled to compete at the Salve Regina Veitor Trophy and MIT Central Series One events next weekend.
