Both the Massachusetts Maritime dinghy and offshore sailing teams began their respective seasons with solid performances in several venues across the region over the weekend, including a win in the cruising class in the Mattapoisett Round The Bay race.

Seniors Kyle Mahaffey (Southbury, Conn.) and Matthew Butler (Guilford, Conn.) led the way for the Buccaneer offshore squad in the Mattapoisett Round The Bay, as they guided the Comet to the triumph in the cruising class.  Addtionally, the Hopituh, skippered by junior Daniel Barry (Dartmouth, Mass.), finished third in the spinnakers class.

At the Quisset Round The Bay event that took place on September 7-8, Comet placed third in the cruising class, led by Mahaffey, Butler and senior Jesse Wilson (Suffolk, Va.), while Barry led the Hopituh to a sixth place performance in the racing division and senior Timothy Dexter (Manchester, Vt.) led the Sarabande crew to an eighth place finish in the spinnaker class.

Eight individuals represented the Buccaneers in dinghy competition at the Maine Maritime Penobscot Bay Open and Philip Harman Cup, as junior Andrew Morgan (Jupiter, Fla.) and freshman Mariah Allen (Rochester, Mass.) sailed in the “A” division while freshmen Kyle Brego (St. John, Virgin Islands) and Nicole Allen (Rochester, Mass.) made their collegiate debuts in the “B” division for Massachusetts Maritime, which finished 13th overall in the event.

Junior Sean McLaughlin (Fairhaven, Mass.) skippered the Bucs’ entry in the Harman Cup, as junior Matthew Ferlotti (Fairfax, Va.), sophomore Rob Queisser (Carmel, Ind.) and freshman Ryan Novak-Smith (Johnston, R.I.) comprised the crew that paced Massachusetts Maritime to a seventh place finish.  Additionally, the Buccaneers finished ninth at the Roger Williams Mount Hope Bay Invitational, as Barry and sophomore Ryan Davis (North Falmouth, Mass.) raced in the “A” division while sophomores Karl Ryder (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Alex Hunt (Baltimore, Md.) comprised the “B” division tandem.

The women’s dinghy squad competed in the MIT Toni Deutsch Trophy, as freshman Emily Casella (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) skippered the “A” Division boat in her first collegiate race in sailing with junior Camille Aiello (Hamden, Conn.), while junior Priscilla Stoll (Pocasset, Mass.) and senior Kaitlyn Nanartowich (Newport, R.I.) comprised the “B” boat, as the tandem combined to finish 16th overall in the event.

Massachusetts Maritime will be in action next weekend at the Navy Shields Trophy, Vermont Lake Champlain Open, Middlebury Cup Northern Series One and the Dartmouth Women’s Mrs. Hurst Bowl.
