ANNAPOLIS, Md. --  The Massachusetts Maritime rifle team began its 2011 season by competing at the fourth annual Mid-Atlantic Conference Invitational over the weekend at the United States Naval Academy, as the Buccaneers competed against five other MAC squads in the event.

The Buccaneers posted a team score of 1,856 points in the first day of competition against Akron, Indiana (Pa.) and host Navy, as sophomore Matthew Cabral (Acushnet, Mass.) led the way in smallbore with 459 points.  Freshman Mitchell MacEachern (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Mason Fortier (Somerset, Mass.) followed with scores of 428 and 424 points, respectively, while junior Steven Johnson (Irvine, Calif.) and freshman Alexander Bryant (Statesboro, Ga.) posted scores of 385 and 344 points, respectively.  Freshman Diana Kurek (Stamford, Conn.) paced Massachusetts Maritime in air with a score of 527 points, while Fortier and junior Christopher Bouchard (Fall River, Mass.) followed with 485 and 460 points, respectively.  Johnson and MacEachern rounded out the scoring with respective totals of 451 and 428 points.

The second day of competition in Head Coach Tom Mantopoulos’s debut with the Buccaneers came against VMI and Penn State, as the Buccaneers posted a score of 1,911 points.  Cabral again paced the smallbore scores with 461 points, while MacEachern followed with 295 points.  Fortier and Johnson each amassed 390 points for Massachusetts Maritime, which received a score of 329 points from Bryant.  Bouchard paced the air scores with 51 points, while Fortier and Kurek followed with 481 and 470 points, respectively.  MacEachern and Johnson rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with 450 and 436 points.

Massachusetts Maritime returns to action on Saturday, November 5th with a MAC dual-match with MIT at the Massachusetts Military Reservation in Falmouth, Mass., as the Buccaneers will also have postal competition with both Princeton and the University of the Sciences (Pa.).
