SAN PEDRO, Calif. --  The Massachusetts Maritime sailing team finished sixth of 10 schools competing in the prestigious 2012 Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup/Cal Maritime Invitational Intercollegiate Regatta that took place over the weekend at the Port of Los Angeles.

The Buccaneers posted a team score of 48 points in the two-day event, outdistancing seventh place Maine Maritime (56 points) and eighth place Coast Guard (63 points) by eight and 15 points, respectively.  Massachusetts Maritime also topped the University of Michigan and the University of California-Berkeley during competition, which was won by host Cal Maritime with a score of 26 points.

Seniors Jeffrey Gawrys (Marblehead, Mass.), Graham Philpot (Laconia, N.H.) and Eric Pattison (Woodbury, Conn.), junior Michael Reney (Duxbury, Mass.), sophomores Timothy Dexter (Manchester, Vt.) and Travis Thonus (East Dennis, Mass.) and freshman Sean McLaughlin (Fairhaven, Mass.) represented the Buccaneers in competition, as Massachusetts Maritime posted a second place, third place and a pair of fourth place finishes over the weekend.

The Buccaneers begin the full spring portion of their 2011-12 season this weekend with competition at the Coast Guard Veitor Trophy as well as the Boston College Central Series One Regatta.
