Annapolis, Md.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. --  The Massachusetts Maritime offshore sailing team placed sixth in the prestigious Kennedy Cup Regatta hosted by the United States Naval Academy over the weekend, as the event is emblematic of the Intercollegiate Off Shore National Championship.

The Buccaneers placed sixth overall in the competition, as host Navy took top honors in the event, which saw difficult conditions on the first day and calmer winds on the second.  Michigan finished as the runner-up, followed by Coast Guard, California Maritime and SUNY Maritime.  Massachusetts Maritime finished ahead of the United States Military Academy, the United States Merchant Marine Academy, St. Mary’s and Maine Maritime.

Representing the Buccaneers in the competition were seniors Graham Philpot (Laconia, N.H. – helm), Jeffrey Gawrys (Marblehead, Mass. – cockpit/tactics), Eric Pattison (Woodbury, Conn. – pit), Jason Pollock (Cataumet, Mass. – trim) and Bradley Shepherd (Winter Park, Fla. – trim); juniors Michael Reney (Duxbury, Mass. – main) and Nathaniel Olsen (East Dennis, Mass. – mast/alt); sophomore Travis Thonus (East Dennis, Mass. – alt/mast) and freshman Sean McLaughlin (Fairhaven, Mass. – bow).

Massachusetts Maritime won the Kennedy Cup crown in 2001 and qualified for this year’s event with a third place performance in the prestigious Navy McMillan Cup in late October.
