Sailing Opens Fall 2011 Schedule With Solid Performances At Several Venues Across Region

MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME SAILING

Saturday-Sunday, September 10-11, 2011

The Massachusetts Maritime sailing team began its Fall 2011 schedule over the weekend with solid performances at several events across the region.

The Buccaneers placed fourth at the Maine Maritime Philip Harman Cup in Castine, Maine, as the tandem of sophomore Richard Graef (Zionsville, Ind.) and freshmen Carter Brown (Hingham, Mass.), Sean McLaughlin (Fairhaven, Mass.) and Marshall Bailey (West Dover, Vt.) bested Vermont and New Hampshire in the event, which was won by Tufts.  The finish qualified Massachusetts Maritime to compete at the New England Sloop Championships for the first time in eight years later this month.

The Buccaneers finished second to Mitchell at the Mount Hope Bay Invitational in Bristol, R.I., as the tandem of sophomore Kaitlyn Nanartowich (Newport, R.I.) and freshmen Matthew Charpentier (Lunenburg, Mass.), Priscilla Stoll (Pocasset, Mass.) and Charlie Cahill (Duxbury, Mass.) raced to a tie with Mitchell, who took top honors based upon a higher heat finish.

Sophomores Kyle Mahaffey (Southbury, Conn.) and Andrew Smith (Marstons Mills, Mass.) teamed up with brown and fellow freshman Daniel Barry (Dartmouth, Mass.) to finish 16th at the Penobscot Bay Open, while senior Graham Philpot (Laconia, N.H.) skippered the “Saiorse” to a solid finish at the Quissett Round The Bay Race in Woods Hole.

Massachusetts Maritime will compete next weekend at the Navy Shields Trophy and the Boston University Invitational.
