Annapolis, Md.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. --  The Massachusetts Maritime offshore sailing team posted a pair of third place victories and a solid third place overall finish over the weekend at the prestigious McMillan Cup Regatta hosted by the United States Naval Academy, as the Buccaneers qualified for a return trip to Annapolis next month for the Kennedy Cup Big Boat National Championship that will take place during the weekend of November 5-6.

Senior Graham Philpot (Laconia, N.H.) skippered the Massachusetts Maritime tandem of seniors Jeffrey Gawrys (Marblehead, Mass.), Eric Pattison (Woodbury, Conn.) and Jason Pollock (Cataumet, Mass.), juniors Michael Reney (Duxbury, Mass.) and Nathaniel Olsen (East Dennis, Mass.), sophomores Timothy Dexter (Manchester Center, Vt.) and Travis Thonus (East Dennis, Mass.) and freshman Sean McLaughlin (Fairhaven, Mass.) during the competition in conditions that proved to be trying with a very light and shifting breeze throughout the weekend.

The United States Merchant Marine Academy took top honors in the competition, while host Navy took the runner-up spot ahead of the Buccaneers, who bested St. Mary’s, Maine Maritime, Coast Guard, New York Maritime, the United States Military Academy and Vermont in the final team standings.

Massachusetts Maritime is set to compete over the coming weekend at the New England Frosh Championships and the Boston University Underdog Trophy.
