FINAL:              MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 3, SALEM STATE 1

SALEM, Mass. --  Goals by senior Thomas McCarthy (Tybee Island, Ga.), sophomore Brendan Gawron (Braintree, Mass.) and freshman Andrew Wayrynen (Rockport, Mass.) lifted Massachusetts Maritime to a 3-1 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer victory over Salem State Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

McCarthy staked the visiting Buccaneers (5-3-1, 2-0-1 MASCAC) to the early lead just 12:58 into the contest on a feed from sophomore William Taylor (Hanover, Mass.) for his third goal of the season, and Wayrynen saw his first collegiate goal become the eventual game-winner in the 24th minute on a pass from fellow freshman Chris Tavernese (Garden City, N.Y.) to extend Massachusetts Maritime’s edge to 2-0.  Gawron gave the visitors a 3-0 cushion just 4:16 later with his team-leading sixth tally of the fall on a feed from junior Mick Rouette (Three Rivers, Mass.), but the host Vikings (2-3-3, 0-1-2 MASCAC) crept back to within a pair in the 35th minute when freshman Lance Francois (Everett, Mass.) converted a pass from senior Hatim Belmadini (Casablanca, Morocco).  That would prove to be all of the scoring in the rain-soaked affair, as the Buccaneer win leaves them tied atop the conference standings with MCLA after the first three weeks of league play.

Junior Mike Pruchnik (Rochester, Mass.) picked up his fourth victory of the season with three saves in goal for Massachusetts Maritime, while junior Greg Enos (Peabody, Mass.) made six stops in net in the setback for Salem State.  The Buccaneers, who have now won five straight in the series between the two schools dating back to 2013, outshot the Vikings by an 11-7 margin overall (9-4 on goal) and took four of the six corner kicks in the contest.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts UMass Dartmouth in a non-league outing on Tuesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Salem State heads to Wenham, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon for a non-league match with Gordon that begins at 4:00 p.m.
