BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Sophomore Mohamed Kenawy (Revere, Mass.) netted a hat trick to lead 12th-ranked UMass Boston to a 3-1 non-league college men’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.
Freshman Adam Crawford’s (Kingston, Mass.) second goal of the season in the 36th minute on a feed from junior Kevin O’Leary (Norton, Mass.) staked the host Buccaneers (7-8-1) to the early lead, but Kenawy evened matters for the visiting Beacons (15-1-1) on a cross from senior Edmilson Barros (Praia, Cape Verde) with 4:02 remaining in the half for a 1-1 draw at the break. Kenawy gave UMass Boston the lead for good in the 57th minute with an unassisted tally, and he completed his hat trick just over five minutes later on another Barros cross for his 16th goal of the season that accounted for the final margin.
Freshman Omar Castro-Dreher (Woonsocket, R.I.) picked up his 11th win of the season without making a second half save in goal for the Beacons, who received a first half stop from fellow freshman Aidan Carter (Weymouth, Mass.). Junior Mike Pruchnik (Rochester, Mass.) made three saves in 65-plus minutes of play in suffering the setback in goal for Massachusetts Maritime, as UMass Boston outshot the Buccaneers by a 14-2 margin overall (6-2 on goal) and took six of the eight corner kicks on the evening.
Massachusetts Maritime seeks the first Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference title in program history on Saturday afternoon with a league match at Westfield State that begins at 1:00 p.m., as the Buccaneers enter the contest a point ahead of second place Worcester State and three points clear of both MCLA and Bridgewater State. UMass Boston closes out its regular season campaign on Saturday afternoon with a trip to Keene, N.H. to take on Keene State in a Little East Conference clash that also begins at 1:00 p.m.
