Coughlin Field, Worcester, Mass.

FINAL:              MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 1, WORCESTER STATE 0

WORCESTER, Mass. --  Sophomore Brendan Gawron’s (Braintree, Mass.) goal in the 29th minute held up as the game-winner and lifted Massachusetts Maritime to a 1-0 victory over Worcester State in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Coughlin Field.

Gawron converted a feed from senior Thomas McCarthy (Tybee Island, Ga.) just inside the box for his second tally of the season for the visiting Buccaneers (3-2, 1-0 MASCAC), and junior Mike Pruchnik (Rochester, Mass.) made that stand up with a career-high 10 saves in goal to record his second win of the fall as well as his first career shutout.

Junior Jason Barrett (Spencer, Mass.) made eight stops in net in the setback for the host Lancers (2-2, 0-1 MASCAC), as Worcester State outshot Massachusetts Maritime by a 19-16 margin overall (10-9 on goal) while each team took five corner kicks in the contest.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Anna Maria in a non-league outing on Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Worcester State heads to Chicopee, Mass. on Wednesday evening for a non-league match with Elms that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
