FINAL: WPI 2, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 1 (DOUBLE OVERTIME)
WORCESTER, Mass. -- Junior Kurt Naugler’s (Westford, Mass.) goal with 5:23 remaining in the second overtime lifted WPI to a 2-1 non-league college men’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
The host Engineers (5-0) remained unbeaten with their second half comeback, as WPI surrendered its first goal of the season in the 15th minute after junior Nick Parker (Plymouth, Mass.) converted a pass from freshman Tim Paz (Baltic, Conn.) to give the visiting Buccaneers (2-2) the early advantage. Freshman Anthony Vigliotta (Beverly, Mass.) evened matters for the Engineers just 3:46 into the second half on a feed from senior Eric Crevoiserat (Glastonbury, Conn.) to set up Naugler’s heroics, as he converted a cross from fellow senior Chris Murray (Canton, Mass.) on the golden goal.
Freshman Connor Hoeckele (Granby, Conn.) picked up the win without having to make a save on the day for WPI, while sophomore Joe Cohen (Plymouth, Mass.) made a career-high 11 stops in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as the Engineers outshot the Buccaneers by a 25-6 margin while taking all six corner kicks in the contest.
Massachusetts Maritime wraps up a four-match road swing on Wednesday afternoon by heading to Dudley, Mass. to take on Nichols in a non-league outing that begins at 4:00 p.m., while WPI will entertain Brandeis in a non-league match on Wednesday evening at Alumni Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m.
