Cohen, Rouette Named As MASCAC Men's Soccer Co-Player, Rookie Of The Week

Massachusetts Maritime sophomore goalkeeper Joe Cohen and freshman back Michael Rouette were named as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Co-Player and Rookie of the Week on Monday morning for their efforts in a pair of contests for the Buccaneers last week.

Cohen, a native of Plymouth, Mass. and a graduate of Plymouth South High School, copped his fourth MASCAC honor of the season, as he shared this week’s accolade with Framingham State junior midfielder Cory Cardeiro.  Cohen made six saves, including a point blank stop in the closing minutes of play, in Massachusetts Maritime’s 1-0 victory over MCLA last Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium that clinched second place in the final regular season conference standings and a bye into the league semifinals.  The win was Cohen’s seventh of the season and also marked his seventh shutout of the campaign, as he now sports an 0.76 goals against average to go with 92 saves for an .885 saves percentage.

Rouette, a native of Three Rivers, Mass. and a graduate of Monson High School, scored the golden goal in Saturday’s triumph over MCLA, as he converted a corner kick from senior tri-captain Rob Robbs (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) just 5:05 into the match.  Rouette has been solid on both sides of the ball for the Buccaneers during his inaugural collegiate season, as he has netted a pair of goals and three assists for seven points as a member of the top defensive unit in the conference.  Rouette is the second straight Massachusetts Maritime player to claim MASCAC Rookie of the Week honors, as freshman teammate Chris Beaulieu (Carver, Mass./Carver) copped the accolade last Monday as well.

Massachusetts Maritime finished regular season play at 7-7-2 overall and 4-2-1 in MASCAC action under 22nd-year Head Coach Greg Perry, as the Buccaneers have secured consecutive post-season berths for the first time in program history while recording their highest conference finish in 10 years.  Massachusetts Maritime will host the winner of Tuesday’s night’s conference quarterfinal round contest between third-seeded and host Fitchburg State and sixth-seeded Westfield State in Friday’s MASCAC semifinal clash at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m. EST, and the two conference semifinal round winners will meet for the 2014 MASCAC Championship on Sunday, November 9th at the site of the highest remaining seed.
