FINAL:              MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 2, UMASS BOSTON 2 (DOUBLE OVERTIME)

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Freshman Alex Thompson’s (Mansfield, Mass.) goal with 5:14 remaining in regulation lifted Massachusetts Maritime to a 2-2 double overtime draw with UMass Boston in a non-league college men’s soccer match played Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

Senior Stuart Kinsman (Granville, Mass.) had given the host Buccaneers (6-7-2) the early advantage when he converted junior Connor McInnis’s (Duxbury, Mass.) corner kick just 12:38 into the contest for his fourth goal of the season, but the visiting Beacons (12-4-2) evened matters in the 31st minute when freshman Marcelo Cunha (Goiania Goias, Brazil) netted his second marker of the fall off of senior Douglas Silveira’s (Revere, Mass.) corner kick.  UMass Boston took a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute on junior Pedro Dasilva’s (Fogo, Cape Verde) team-leading 13th goal of the season off his own rebound, but Thompson provided the equalizer for Massachusetts Maritime in the closing minutes of regulation, as he took feeds from McInnis and fellow freshman Kevin O’Leary (Norton, Mass.) and scored from directly in front of the net for his first collegiate tally.  Both teams had chances to win in the two extra sessions, as Silveira was denied from point blank range and O’Leary hit the cross bar with 5:23 to play in the match.

Freshman Mike Pruchnik (Rochester, Mass.) earned the tie in his first collegiate start in goal for Massachusetts Maritime, as he made six saves in the opening half of action and the two overtime periods, while fellow freshman Tom Dacey (Raynham, Mass.) made seven stops in the final 45 minutes of regulation for the hosts.  Junior Alfonso Rosales (Revere, Mass.) made three saves in the draw for UMass Boston, as the Beacons outshot the Buccaneers by a 27-8 margin (15-5 on goal) while holding a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks for the evening.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts MCLA in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 4:00 p.m., as the Buccaneers hold a one-point edge over both the Trailblazers and Fitchburg State for second place in the league standings heading into the weekend.  UMass Boston entertains Rhode Island College in its Little East Conference regular season finale on Saturday afternoon in Boston beginning at 1:00 p.m.
