Starkey Named As NEWMAC Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player Of The Week

Massachusetts Maritime junior defender Joe Starkey was named as the New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference Men’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week on Monday morning for his efforts in the Buccaneers’ season-opening 16-6 victory over Albertus Magnus last Saturday afternoon.

Starkey, a native of Burlington, Mass. and a graduate of Burlington High School, collected six ground balls and caused three turnovers on the day for Head Coach Rory Deegan’s squad, as he keyed a defensive unit that limited the visiting Falcons to just two second half goals while forcing 28 total turnovers for the contest.  The win was Massachusetts Maritime’s third in as many series meetings with Albertus Magnus dating back to 2014, as the Buccaneers have won five straight season-opening matches dating back to 2012.

Deegan’s squad returns to action on Tuesday evening when Massachusetts Maritime entertains Saint Joseph’s (Maine) in a non-league match at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m. EST.
