FINAL:              COAST GUARD 12, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 8

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Louis DePaolis (Westchester, N.Y.) and freshmen Jack Pope (San Diego, Calif.) and Anthony Wyler (Fulton, Md.) each netted hat tricks and an assist for four points to lead Coast Guard to a 12-8 New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

The visiting Bears (10-5, 3-3 NEWMAC) jumped out to a 3-1 first quarter advantage on the strength of a pair of Pope goals before the host Buccaneers (5-11, 1-5 NEWMAC) scored three times in the final 5:46 of the opening stanza to grab a 4-3 lead on freshman Cody Livermore’s (Ludlow, Mass.) marker.  Coast Guard regained a 5-4 edge on Wyler’s tally with 8:31 remaining in the half, but Massachusetts Maritime received goals off the sticks of senior Reed McLean (Wilbraham, Mass.) and freshman Ted Powers (Marshfield, Mass.) in the closing 2:51 of the second quarter to grab a 6-5 advantage at the break.  The Bears netted the first three tallies over the first 4:25 after intermission to take an 8-6 lead on Pope’s third score of the night, and after McLean pulled the Buccaneers back to within one, Coast Guard iced its triumph by collecting four of the contest’s final five markers (including a pair by DePaolis) to account for the final margin.

Senior Justin Huemme (Sherborn, Mass.) added two goals and an assist in the win for the Bears, who also received a marker and helper from junior Blaise Curtis (Riverside, Md.) and single assists off the sticks of freshmen Benner Guersten (Rodman, N.Y.) and Ian Logan (Virginia Beach, Va.).  McLean notched a hat trick in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received two goals and a pair of assists from Livermore as well as a marker and two helpers from Powers.  Senior Anthony Kurylak (Exeter, N.H.) and junior Ryan McNeill (Burlington, Mass.) also tallied for the Buccaneers, who received a pair of assists off the stick of junior Steven Anderson (Crownsville, Md.).

Freshman Trey Johnson (Millersville, Md.) picked up the win in goal for Coast Guard with a six-save effort, while senior James Klose (Ellicott City, Md.) made 11 stops in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as the Bears outshot the Buccaneers by a 34-26 margin (23-14 on goal) for the match.
