FINAL:              MIT 21, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 11

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. --  Junior Harris Stolzenberg (Weston, Fla.) netted five goals and three assists for eight points as MIT rallied from a one-goal halftime deficit to notch a 21-11 New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Jack Barry Field.

The host Engineers (11-3, 4-1 NEWMAC) trailed 7-6 at the break before scoring twice in the opening 2:18 after intermission to forge an 8-7 lead on senior Paul Orrson’s (Baltimore, Md.) goal, but freshman Cody Livermore (Ludlow, Mass.) evened matters for the visiting Buccaneers (5-10, 1-4 NEWMAC) just 1:29 later.  MIT took control of the contest with eight unanswered tallies, including three by Stolzenberg, in just under 12 minutes of action to take a 16-8 edge on sophomore Graham Davis’s (Crofton, Md.) marker with 11:21 remaining, and after senior Reed McLean (Wilbraham, Mass.) closed Massachusetts Maritime’s deficit back to six with a pair of tallies in less than two minutes of action, the hosts iced their triumph with five more unanswered goals that featured a man-down marker off the stick of freshman Jake Stein (Vienna, Va.) to account for the final margin.

Senior Jonah Hessels (Laytonsville, Md.) and sophomore Mitch Turley (Westfield, Ind.) each added hat tricks and an assist in the win for the Engineers, who also received a pair of tallies and a helper from Orrson.  Davis and sophomore Jack Kelly (Milford, Del.) finished with two goals each for MIT, which also received markers from senior Chris McPherson (Gaithersburg, Md.) as well as freshmen Blake Berk (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Eddy Garcia-Montes (Miami, Fla.).  Senior Luke Verdi (Middletown, Md.) registered three assists for the hosts, who also received a helper off the stick of junior Michael Traub (Aliso Viejo, Calif.).

McLean matched Stolzenberg’s game-high point total by netting a career-high seven goals and an assist in the setback for the Buccaneers, who also received a pair of goals and two assists from Livermore on the day.  Senior Anthony Kurylak (Exeter, N.H.) chipped in with a marker and helper for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a goal from junior Joe Starkey (Burlington, Mass.) and an assist off the stick of freshman Ted Powers (Marshfield, Mass.).

Senior Eric Bartell (San Diego, Calif.) picked up the win in goal with a 10-save effort for MIT, while senior James Klose (Ellicott City, Md.) made 11 stops in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as the Engineers outshot the Buccaneers by a 56-27 margin overall (32-21 on goal) for the contest.
