FINAL:              WHEATON 13, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 11

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Kyle Rumberger (Hyannis, Mass.) netted a hat trick and an assist for four points as Wheaton snapped a late tie with a pair of goals in the final 4:12 of play to post a 13-11 New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

The visiting Lyons (7-8, 3-4 NEWMAC) overcame a 5-2 first quarter deficit by notching four of five second quarter tallies, as Rumberger’s marker with 31 seconds remaining in the stanza staked Wheaton to a 7-6 advantage at the break.  Senior Steven Anderson’s (Crownsville, Md.) man-up goal 3:27 after intermission forged a 7-7 tie for the host Buccaneers (5-12, 1-6 NEWMAC), and after junior Devin Higgins (Nantucket, Mass.) gave the visitors an 8-7 cushion just 1:39 later, tallies off the sticks of Anderson and senior Reed McLean (Wilbraham, Mass.) in a 27 second span gave Massachusetts Maritime to a 9-8 edge.  Sophomore James Holston’s (Wynnewood, Pa.) goal with two seconds to play in the third quarter evened matters for Wheaton at 9-9 heading into the final frame, and the two teams traded scores in the first nine-plus minutes of the stanza, with McLean’s marker with 5:07 remaining forging the eighth and final tie of the night.  Freshman Matt Morgan (York, Maine) gave the Lyons the lead for good with 4:12 to play, and Rumberger provided an insurance goal 51 seconds later to ice the visitors’ triumph.

Freshman Josh Talanian (Arlington, Mass.) added a pair of goals and an assist in the win for Wheaton, which also received two tallies each from Higgins and senior Brian Teague (Cross River, N.Y.).  Morgan finished with a marker and two helpers for the Lyons, who also received goals from sophomore Zachary Brode (Boulder, Colo.) and freshman Alex Stomberg (Glastonbury, Conn.).  Junior Will Morrison (Osterville, Mass.) and freshman CJ Leighton (Falmouth, Maine) collected two assists each for the visitors, who also received a helper off the stick of sophomore Griffin Phaneuf (Manchester, N.H.).

McLean finished with a game-high five goals and an assist in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a hat trick and helper off the stick of fellow senior Anthony Kurylak (Exeter, N.H.), as the duo became the 13th and 14th players in Buccaneer history to reach the 100-career point plateau in the process.  Anderson finished with a pair of tallies and an assist for the hosts, who also received a marker from freshman Zack O’Brien (Lakeville, Mass.).  Freshman Cody Livermore (Ludlow, Mass.) notched four assists on the night for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received single helpers off the sticks of sophomore Keaghan Bartley (Richmond, Va.) and freshman Jake O’Riordan (Marshfield, Mass.).

Senior Ryan Clair (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) picked up the win in goal with a nine-save effort for Wheaton, while senior James Klose (Ellicott City, Md.) made 14 stops in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as the Lyons outshot the Buccaneers by a 44-36 overall margin for the contest.
