BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore T.J. Ragusa (Wantagh, N.Y.) netted a hat trick to lead SUNY-Maritime to a 7-2 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime in opening round play of the Third Annual Maritime Lacrosse Classic Friday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.

Ragusa tallied twice in the opening 30 minutes of action to help stake the visiting Privateers (2-1) to a 4-0 advantage at the break, and after the host Buccaneers (2-1) had closed back to within three at 5-2 on a pair of markers by freshman Ted Powers (Marshfield, Mass.) in the final 1:32 of the third stanza, Ragusa completed his hat trick early in the final frame to restore SUNY-Maritime’s four goal lead.  Junior Joe Fusco’s (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) goal with 1:07 remaining iced SUNY-Maritime’s first win in the series with Massachusetts Maritime in three years.

Freshman Michael Petty (Port Washington, N.Y.) notched a goal and an assist in the victory for the Privateers, who also received tallies from sophomores Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y.) and Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y.) as well as assists off the sticks of juniors Chris Haun (Nesconset, N.Y.) and Chris Stickney (Bay Shore, N.Y.).  Senior Anthony Kurylak (Exeter, N.H.) and freshman Kenneth Parnell (Marshfield, Mass.) collected helpers on both goals for the Buccaneers, who suffered their first setback in five Maritime Classic matches.

Sophomore Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal for SUNY-Maritime with a nine-save effort, while senior James Klose (Ellicott City, Md.) made 11 stops in net for Massachusetts Maritime as the Privateers outshot the Buccaneers by a 35-15 margin overall (18-11 on goal) for the contest.
