Larchmont, N.Y./Bristol, R.I.

LARCHMONT, N.Y./BRISTOL, R.I. --  Both the Massachusetts Maritime offshore and dinghy sailing squads posted solid performances over the weekend in their respective events at the Storm Trysail Regatta and the Roger Williams Invitational.

Sixteen cadets competed at the prestigious Storm Trysail event on Long Island Sound in a pair of classes, as senior Michael Reney (Duxbury, Mass.) paced the J-109 class with a crew consisting of juniors Kaitlyn Nanartowich (Newport, R.I.) and Kyle Mahaffey (Southbury, Conn.) as well as sophomores Priscilla Stoll (Pocasset, Mass.), Charles Cahill (Duxbury, Mass.) and Andrew Ferlotti (Fairfax, Va.).

Sophomore Sean McLaughlin (Fairhaven, Mass.) skippered the J-44 class along with a crew consisting of juniors Travis Thonus (East Dennis, Mass.) and Andrew Gregoire (Charlotte, N.C.), sophomores Camille Aiello (Hamden, Conn.), Daniel Barry (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Christopher Wagner (Middleton, Mass.) as well as freshmen Tor Johannessen (Amesbury, Mass.), James Lamb (Taunton, Mass.) and Timothy Forgione (Kendall Park, N.J.).

The Buccaneers tied Navy and Maine Maritime for the top spot in the competition, but fell to third place in a tiebreaker, with the Midshipmen taking top honors and the Mariners finishing in the runner-up spot.

Strong winds and a heavy current played a major factor in the dinghy competition at Roger Williams, as the tandem of sophomore Matthew Charpentier (Lunenburg, Mass.) and freshman Karl Ryder comprising the “A” boat and senior Mikayla Martin (Warwick, R.I.), sophomore Andrew Morgan (Jupiter, Fla.) and freshman Andrew Holmes (Marlboro, Mass.) racing in the “B” boat over the weekend.  The Buccaneers recorded several top performances while placing 16th overall in the competition.

Massachusetts Maritime will host the Great Herring Pond Open next weekend and will also compete at the Tufts Lark Invitational and McGill Cup Northern Series Five.
