Hurricane Cup/Bowdoin Hewitt Trophy

Marion, Mass./Brunswick, Maine

MARION, Mass./BRUNSWICK, Maine --  The Massachusetts Maritime sailing team posted solid performances in less than perfect weather conditions in a pair of events over the weekend, as the Buccaneers competed at the Hurricane Cup Regatta off the waters of Marion as well as the Bowdoin Hewitt Trophy.

In the cruising class, sophomore Charles Cahill (Duxbury, Mass.) skippered the “Comet” to a second place finish, as he was joined by sophomore Camille Aiello (Hamden, Conn.) and freshmen Alyssa Lebo, Grahame Hallowell and Ryan Davis.  Massachusetts Maritime also entered the “Impulse” in the crusing class, which was skippered by sophomore Frederik Holm (Pittsburgh, Pa.) with a crew of sophomore Mark Mejicano-Gormley (Orland Park, Ill.), Brandon Deal and Ryan Hoey.

In the racing division, the contingent of freshman Courtney Collins (Pembroke, Mass.), Leah Saunders (Rochester, Mass.), Francis Dougherty, Timothy Forgione, Jackie Gomes, Tor Johannessen and James Lamb led the “Sarabande” to a fourth place finish, while the “Dawn Star”, skippered by senior Michael Reney (Duxbury, Mass.), finished sixth in the event, as that crew was comprised by senior Nathaniel Olsen, juniors Andrew Gregoire (Charlotte, N.C.), Kyle Mahaffey (Southbury, Conn.), Travis Thonus (East Dennis, Mass.) as well as sophomores Andrew Ferlotti (Fairfax, Va.), Priscilla Stoll (Pocasset, Mass.) and Christopher Wagner (Middleton, Mass.).

The tandem of junior Kaitlyn Nanartowich (Newport, R.I.), sophomores Sean McLaughlin (Fairhaven, Mass.), Daniel Barry (Dartmouth, Mass.) and freshman Alexander Hunt finished 12th among 15 entrants at the Bowdoin Hewitt Trophy, as the crew combined for a seventh place showing after the first day of competition only to be hampered by weather conditions on the final day.  Massachusetts Maritime did top UConn, Middlebury and Amherst in the event won by the host Polar Bears.

The Buccaneers will compete next weekend at the Bates Protest Trophy, Southern Maine Women’s Olympian Trophy, Roger Williams Southern Series Five and the prestigious Storm Trysail Regatta off the coast of Long Island.
