Offshore Sailing Posts Runner-Up Performance At Prestigious Navy MacMillan Trophy, Bucs To Compete At Kennedy Cup In Early November

ANNAPOLIS, Md. --  The Massachusetts Maritime offshore sailing team finished second at the prestigious MacMillan Trophy hosted by the United States Naval Academy, as the Buccaneers were nipped by one point for the team title by the host Midshipmen.

Massachusetts Maritime entered Sunday’s final day of competition tied for fifth place with Maine Maritime in the standings after finishing third and seventh in those races, but the Buccaneers took a pair of top honors and posted a runner-up performance in the three races on Sunday in vaulting to second place.

Seniors Michael Reney (Duxbury, Mass.) and Nathaniel Olsen (East Dennis, Mass.), juniors Travis Thonus (East Dennis, Mass.) and Timothy Dexter (Manchester, Vt.), sophomores Sean McLaughlin (Fairhaven, Mass.), Daniel Barry (Dartmouth, Mass.), Andrew Morgan (Jupiter, Fla.) and Matthew Ferlotti (Fairfax, Va.), along with freshman Tor Johannessen (Amesbury, Mass.), comprised Massachusetts Maritime’s crew for the weekend competition.

The Buccaneers topped SUNY-Maritime, Merchant Marine, Coast Guard, Maine Maritime, the United States Military Academy and St. Mary’s College in the final standings.

Massachusetts Maritime will return to the waters off Annapolis from November 1-4 to compete at Navy’s Kennedy Cup Regatta, which is the Collegiate Offshore Sailing national championship.
