MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME SAILING

Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Regatta

Sunday – Monday, December 30-31, 2012

New Orleans, La.

NEW ORLEANS, La. --  The Massachusetts Maritime sailing team enjoyed great success in “The Big Easy” to close out the calendar year last weekend, as the Buccaneers placed second among nine competitors at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Regatta in the waters off New Orleans.

Junior Kaitlyn Nanartowich (Newport, R.I.) and sophomore Sean McLaughlin (Fairhaven, Mass.) sailed in the “A” Division for the Buccaneers, while the sophomore tandem of Daniel Barry (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Camille Aiello (Hamden, Conn.) competed in the “B” division in an event that used a combined division format scoring system

Sunday’s racing saw a flux of conditions that started with winds of 20 MPH and ended with almost no breeze in the last race of the day, as Massachusetts Maritime recorded one first place finish and several top three performances throughout.  As a result, the Buccaneers stood atop the standings by one point over the University of Michigan.

Monday saw winds build from light to stronger as the day progressed, and Massachusetts Maritime recorded several top five finishes in conditions that featured gusts up to 25 MPH as the Buccaneers capped the event with a second place overall finish.
