MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME SAILING

Navy John F. Kennedy Cup Regatta

Friday-Sunday, November 2-4, 2012

Annapolis, Md.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. --  The Massachusetts Maritime offshore sailing team finished seventh over the weekend at the prestigious John F. Kennedy Cup Regatta hosted by the United States Naval Academy, as the event is considered to be the national championship of collegiate offshore sailing.

The Buccaneers sailed in colder and windier conditions as the event progressed through the weekend, as Massachusetts Maritime placed sixth in Friday’s opening race before a wild broach took the vessel beyond the leeward mark in the second race, resulting in a ninth place finish.  The windy conditions on Saturday gave the Buccaneers a seventh place finish in the two races on the day, and Massachusetts Maritime ended the competition on Sunday with a first and a third place finish.

Senior Michael Reney (Duxbury, Mass.) skippered the Buccaneers during the competition, with sophomore Daniel Barry (Dartmouth, Mass.) serving as his tactician.  Junior Timothy Dexter (Manchester, Vt.) led the cockpit crew of sophomores Matthew Ferlotti (Fairfax, Va.) and Andrew Morgan (Jupiter, Fla.), while the bow team consisted of senior Nathaniel Olsen (East Dennis, Mass.), junior Travis Thonus (East Dennis, Mass.) and sophomore Sean McLaughlin (Fairhaven, Mass.).  Junior Kaitlyn Nanartowich (Newport, R.I.) and sophomore Priscilla Stoll (Pocasset, Mass.) also sailed on the weekend.

Host Navy won the overall competition for a second straight year, as the Midshipmen bested California Maritime and the United States Merchant Marine Academy in the runner-up and third place spots.  SUNY-Maritime and Maine Maritime followed in fourth and fifth place, while Coast Guard edged out Massachusetts Maritime for sixth place.  The Buccaneers finished ahead of the United States Military Academy, Michigan and St. Mary’s College on the weekend.
