FINAL:              WORCESTER STATE 5, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 0

WORCESTER, Mass. --  Junior Kendal Bergenholtz (Grafton, Mass.) and sophomore Ashleigh Howland (Wilmington, Mass.) each scored a pair of goals to lead Worcester State to a 5-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Coughlin Field.

Bergenholtz gave the host Lancers (4-1-1, 1-0 MASCAC) the only tally they would need in the 26th minute on a feed from freshman Jenna Martin (Salem, N.H.), and Howland extended that margin to 2-0 with 3:32 remaining in the opening half on an assist from freshman Molly Palatino (Ludlow, Mass.).  Markers by Bergenholtz and freshman Tsara Leblanc (Gardner, Mass.) in a 35 second span midway through the second half gave Worcester State a 4-0 advantage, and Howland closed out the scoring for the contest with her second of the day on a feed from junior Angelina Sutherland (Tyngsboro, Mass.) with 5:12 to play to account for the final margin.

Senior Jillian Witkowski (Leicester, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for the Lancers by making one save for the match, while senior Katie Levesque (Wilmot, N.H.) made 15 stops in the setback for the visiting Buccaneers (2-4, 0-1 MASCAC).  Worcester State took 34 of the contest’s 35 shots (20 on goal) as well as all 11 corner kicks on the day.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Bridgewater State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference outing next Friday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Worcester State heads to Newport, R.I. on Thursday afternoon to take on Salve Regina in a non-league match that begins at 3:30 p.m.
