FINAL:              COAST GUARD 2, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 1

NEW LONDON, Conn. --  Goals by freshmen Kali Borden (Milford, Conn.) and Olivia Holt (Louisville, Ky.) led Coast Guard to a 2-1 non-league college women’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday evening at Nitchman Field.

After a scoreless opening half of play, Borden gave the host Bears (4-1) a 1-0 lead just 4:22 after intermission with her first collegiate marker on a breakaway, and Holt provided a key insurance tally with her second goal of the season that came in the 70th minute of action.  Junior Aoife Callinan (West Falmouth, Mass.) sliced the visiting Buccaneers’ (2-3) deficit in half with her second goal of the season that came with 29 seconds remaining in the match, as that marker accounted for the final score.

Freshman Rachel Boohar (Oxford, Pa.) picked up the win in goal for Coast Guard by making a pair of saves, while senior Katie Levesque (Wilmot, N.H.) was stellar in net for Massachusetts Maritime with a 16-save effort, including nine stops over the final 45 minutes of action.  The Bears outshot the Buccaneers by a 29-3 margin overall (18-2 on goal) and held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks for the contest.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Worcester, Mass. on Saturday morning to take on Worcester State in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams beginning at 11:00 a.m., while Coast Guard hosts Springfield in its New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference lid-lifter on Saturday afternoon at Nitchman Field beginning at 2:30 p.m.
