CHICOPEE, Mass. -- The Massachusetts Maritime volleyball team opened its 2011 campaign on Friday evening by dropping a pair of 3-0 non-league decisions to SUNY-Cobleskill and host Elms in opening round play of the Elms Blazer Invitational at Picknelly Arena.
Junior Alex Burgess-Chrost (Leominster, Mass.) notched a combined seven kills and four digs in the two setbacks for the Buccaneers (0-2), including four kills in the opener that Cobleskill’s Fighting Tigers (1-1) took by game scores of 25-22, 25-11 and 25-11. Sophomore Michaela Garrity (Tiverton, R.I.) added eight set assists and three digs on the night for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received five kills from senior Victoria Presutti (Marshfield, Mass.) and a career-best three kills from sophomore Ashley Button (Southfield, Mass.) in the second match setback to the host Blazers (1-1) by game scores of 25-10, 25-19 and 25-5.
Massachusetts Maritime closes out play at the Elms Blazer Invitational on Saturday morning by taking on Husson in a non-league match at Picknelly Arena that begins at 10:00 a.m.
