Women's Soccer: Bucs Drop Non-Conference Match to RIC

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Women's soccer took on Rhode Island College on Wednesday evening in non-conference play at home. Both teams came into the game looking for their first win of the season. A hand ball in the box called against the Bucs giving the Anchorwomen a penalty kick proved to be the difference in the 33rd minute as RIC took home a 2-0 victory over Maritime.

The Bucs took two shots in the game, both from Julia Podchaiski. Goalkeeper Brady Deschamps made 10 saves in the game and allowed two goals. Former Anchorwoman Reagan Kerecz came in in relief of Deschamps, who took the field as an attacker, and made five saves of her own in 24:16 on the field.

Marissa Ruzzano and Riley Scpecht were the goal scorers for Rhode Island College. Serena Forte was credited with an assist in the game. Goalkeeper Maya Benedict earned her first win of the season in goal.

RIC outshot the Bucs 22-2. Each team had two corner kicks in the match.

Rhode Island College attacked from the opening whistle, only allowing Maritime down the other end of the field on a handful of occasions. With the score knotted at zeros, the Buccaneers were called for a handball in the box allowing Ruzzano to take a penalty kick. She put the shot past Deschamps to her left to put the Anchorwomen up 1-0.

In the second half, Rhode Island College scored their second goal in the 57th minute. Forte took a shot that was initially saved by Deschamps. The ball went off the crossbar and fell to the feet of Specht who tucked it home for the second and final goal of the match.

The Buccaneers are back home on Saturday, September 24th for a MASCAC matchup with the winless Salem State Vikings at 4pm.
