Buccaneers Shutout in Home Opener by Owls

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Monday marked the Buccaneers women's soccer team's home opener against the UMPI Owls at Clean Harbors Stadium. Coming off of a 1-1 draw against Dean on Saturday, the Bucs were unable to score on the Owls on Labor Day falling 2-0.

In the second minute, UMPI opened the scoring on a Zhoreen Malik goal. The opportunity came on a lapse in play by the Bucs defense allowing Alexis Ireland to find Malik over the top and she found the back of the net. In the 70th minute, Alexis Ireland scored a goal of her own from Taylor Shute on a ball in the box that was misplayed by the Bucs. Senior Captain and goalkeeper Savannah Rodriguez made four saves in the match.

The Buccaneers created a number of chances and were mostly sound on defense for most of the day. The Bucs outshot the Owls in the second half in a comeback attempt with four shots in total from senior Captain Julia Quindley. Fellow senior Captain Julia Podchaiski and senior Ariel Damery each took two shots in the game, one apiece on target. Freshman goalkeeper Brady Deschamps made seven saves on nine shots in the loss.

UMPI outshot the Bucs 12-10 in the game and Maritime have one more corner than the Owls with three.

The Bucs are back home on Thursday, September 8th for a 7pm game against the Mitchell Mariners.
