FINAL: MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 1, FITCHBURG STATE 0
FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Sophomore Andrew Wayrynen’s (Rockport, Mass.) goal with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half held up as the game-winner and led Massachusetts Maritime to a 1-0 victory over Fitchburg State in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Elliot Field.
Wayrynen converted a pass from senior Mick Rouette (Three Rivers, Mass.) on the deciding tally (his first of the season) for the visiting Buccaneers (2-3, 1-0 MASCAC), and senior Mike Pruchnik (Rochester, Mass.) made that stand up by making four saves in goal, including a stop with eight seconds remaining in the match, to earn his second win of the season and third career shutout.
Senior Alex Al-Zaibak (Hingham, Mass.) made nine stops in the setback for the host Falcons (2-2, 0-1 MASCAC) as Massachusetts Maritime outshot Fitchburg State by a 19-10 margin overall (10-4 on goal) to earn its first triumph at Elliot Field since posting a 4-2 win back on October 29, 2005.
Massachusetts Maritime heads to Waltham, Mass. on Tuesday evening to take on Brandeis in a non-league outing beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Fitchburg State hosts Rivier in a non-league clash on Wednesday evening at Elliot Field that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
